Diabetes Management Tips

June 12th, 2006

Rather than explain to you what you already know about the types of diabetes and what it is, I am going to ask you to consider the humble water bottle and its dramatic effect on your health.

Drinking water is one of the healthiest commodities you can give to your body. Keep a water bottle with you. Start out with it frozen in the morning if you will be gone all-day. As the ice melts, refill it with water and have it handy wherever you are. Water will dull your appetite, keep your body regular, and give your face and skin the moisture they need to look and feel healthy. Want to avoid diabetes? Try some of these simple steps to reduce your risk.

· Try a different form of exercise or physical activity. If you have been using a stationary bicycle, put a leash on your dog and take him for a walk. Enjoy the sunshine, say hello to your neighbors. When you get home, you will not only feel better, but you won’t be as tempted to eat.
· Listen to music while you eat. Surrounding your dinner table with relaxing sounds will not only keep you from overeating, it will also give your family a quiet time to share the day with one another.
· Using smaller utensils might help you to eat less by taking smaller bites. Teaspoons, salad forks, or a child’s utensil set might fool your body into thinking it is getting more food, even though you are eating less.
· Remember, it takes twenty minutes for your brain to get the signal that you are full. That means we should eat slow!
· Add a salad to your meal. This will help you fill up faster and you will not want to eat as much of your main entrée. Always keep a healthy snack with you; you won’t have to buy a food item that will be high in calories, salt, or fats.

The Raw Food Diet

June 12th, 2006

On the raw food diet, you should eat foods in their uncooked state - in other words, you are eating food raw. Raw foodists avoid cooking, freezing, and anything involving chemical preservatives. Some raw foodists refuse to use juicers, blenders, or food processors, believing that food should be eaten in its natural state. Most raw foodists will use kitchen appliances such as a juicer that do not change the chemical makeup of the food. Some raw foodists will not do anything more than cut their foods, believing they should eat food in its most natural state. You need to decide for yourself where on the spectrum you are.

Some examples of foods you might eat include: fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, seeds, and different types of seaweed. These foods contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, and with care, it is possible to get all of the essential amino acids (amino acids are what make up proteins). It may be necessary to take a nutritional supplement in order to be sure to get all the essential nutrients.

Could You Be At Risk For Diabetes?

June 11th, 2006

The latest research reports that more than 40 million Americans have “pre-diabetes”. Pre-diabetes (or Impaired Glucose Tolerance) is a combination of factors that you may have right now that puts you at a heightened risk for real, irreversible Type 2 diabetes in ten years. It is usually a combination of inactivity, a fat-laden diet, obesity and genetics that is responsible. When one has pre-diabetes, the level of glucose in the blood is over the normal limit but still has not reached diabetic limits yet.

Pre-diabetes is not diabetes per se and if you are diagnosed with it, it is not a death sentence. With exercise, weight loss and a healthy diet, pre-diabetic people can and have managed to bring down their glucose levels

Tips To Help Pregnant Women Reduce Morning Sickness

May 13th, 2006

The dreaded ‘morning sickness’, extreme nausea and vomiting, will affect around 90% of pregnant women. Just why women have to go through this is not known, but there are some things you can do to minimise this unpleasant part of pregnancy.

1. Ask your medical advisor whether you can take vitamin B6. A dose of approximately 100 mg per day has been shown to reduce the feeling of nausea.

2. Eat foods rich in the B vitamins: examples are nuts, chicken, fish, liver and advocados.

3. Take frequent sips of liquids such as water, soup, tea, and lemonade. This can help in two ways: when you vomit you loose a lot of fluids and it is important to keep your body hyderated at all times; and it also makes vomiting less unpleasant if you have something to bring up. Vomiting when the stomach is empty is even more unpleasant than when you have something to bring up.

4. Avoid foods with strong smells such as spicy or fried foods as such dishes can make you feel queasy and induce vomiting.

5. Snack little and often. When you go to bed place biscuits or muffins at your bedside and nibble these if you wake in the night.

6. Foods high in carbohydrates are more likely to stay down and will ward off hunger. Recommended foods are breads, rice and pasta.

7. If you don’t feel like eating, don’t. If eating will make you feel queasy and cause you to vomit, there is no point. You will not benefit nutritionly if the food comes straight back up.

Morning sickness is the least enjoyable part of being pregnant. How long it lasts varies from women to women. Just keep reminding yourself that it will end.

Tony Luck runs a web site with advice about having babies. The site also includes the famous Chinese Pregnancy chart which predicts whether the baby you are expecting will be a girl or a boy.

Morning Sickness & Miscarriage

May 13th, 2006

One of the biggest fears during early pregnancy is fear of miscarrying. We watch for any small sign that may indicate that there is a problem. One of the things you may be wondering about is if no morning sickness is a sign of miscarriage.

If your morning sickness all of a sudden disappears, it could be a sign that you may be miscarrying, but it could also be caused by something else. Keep in mind that every pregnancy is different, and there are no hard and fast rules about what’s supposed to happen when.

In general, morning sickness is at it’s worst during the first three months and starts to taper off around week 12 – 14 of your pregnancy. If your morning sickness starts to go away around this time, it is most likely just a natural transition from your first trimester to your second trimester. Not all of us are this lucky however. You may not see a difference in your morning sickness until later in your pregnancy or may be unfortunate enough to suffer through it all 9 months.

If you experience morning sickness at all, everything may be just fine. There is a slightly higher chance that you may miscarry if you don’t experience morning sickness at all. The progesterone hormone is one of the hormones during pregnancy that causes you to get sick to your stomach. Low levels of progesterone can cause you to lose the baby. On the other hand, there are many women who have little or no morning sickness and go on to deliver beautiful, healthy babies.

If you have no sign of morning sickness and are concerned, talk to your physician. He or she may want to check on you and your baby and will be able to reassure you that everything is fine.

Easy Recipe For Clear Skin During Summer Months

May 11th, 2006

Here’s a great recipe for a toner/astringent that I love to use every summer- it’s especially great for combination skin. It helps clear pores from sweat, dirt, and other ickies, yet still offers some nice moisturizing benefits for a nice glow. It also feels really nice and refreshing!

1/2 cup witch hazel

1/4 cup water (Tea, especially green or chamomile, is even better!)

1/4 cup lemon juice

5 drops natural vegetable glycerine

5 drops lavender essential oil

2-3 drops peppermint essential oil

Just shake it all up really well in a small bottle. When you’re ready to use it, just dab some on a cotton ball and gently wipe your face clean. Couldn’t be easier!

You can adjust the essential oils to more or less, depending on your skin type. I find it’s best to use in between face washings as a “freshening up”. I noticed sometimes using a toner or astringent right after washing your face can create an imbalance in skin that can dry it out too much - sometimes within an hour it can retaliate and be more oily than it was before! (Especially during the summer heat!)

Don’t forget- sometimes half the fun in homemade beauty recipes is is being creative. If you’d like, don’t be afraid to try your own unique variations!

Morning Sickness Relief

May 11th, 2006

I still haven’t figured out why they call it morning sickness. If you ask me, it’s all day every day sickness. For many of us, dealing with the queasiness and nausea of morning sickness is the hardest part about being pregnant. Thankfully there are quite a few easy and natural ways to improve the way you feel without harming your baby. Here are a few of my favorite remedies to give you morning sickness relief.

Eat small meals spread out through the day. This way your stomach is never quite empty which helps prevent excessive stomach acid. Eating small meals will also keep you from eating too much at once, which can also make you feel sick.

Drink plenty of water. Carry a cup or a water bottle with you at all times and sip throughout the day. The water is important for the overall health and wellbeing of both you and your baby. It will also dilute any stomach acid, keeping you from getting quite as sick.

Take your prenatal vitamins right before you go to sleep at night. Mine used to make me really sick, even if I took them with a full meal. Taking them at night, right before I went to bed, allowed me to fall asleep before I started getting sick. Take them with a snack, like a bowl of cereal, or some crackers and cheese.

Ginger and peppermint will both help with nausea. Carry some ginger snaps, or some candied ginger with you. Nibble on it when you feel the first signs of morning sickness. Carry some peppermint candy or gum with. For bad cases of morning sickness, a cup of peppermint tea always helped me. It may be worth a try.

Please check with your OBGYN about these tips on morning sickness relief before implementing them.
