Melon common is an annual plant of the gourd family with a creeping stem 1 – 3 m long. Fruits are big, aromatic. Fruit pulp, depending on the sort, can be white, greenish, light- orange.
Health benefits of melon
A ripe melon contains carbohydrates perfectly assimilated by the organism, glucose, fructose, saccharose form a great part of them. Melon pulp contains quite a lot of group B vitamins, vitamin C, mineral salts of kalium, magnesium, iron (necessary for blood-forming and normal passing of oxidative processes in the organism), calcium, selenium and others, beneficially influencing blood-forming organs, the cardio-vascular system, the endocrine glands, the thymus gland – this “clock of the immune system”, and the thyroid gland anatomically connected with it.
Melon pulp contains cellulose and pectin substances that are practically not digested in the gastrointestinal tract, but, improving vermicular movement, adsorb harmful substances in the intestinal tract, assisting their detoxification and removal from the organs of digestion. Melon enhances and improves the secretory and motor functions of the organs of digestion.
Melon is especially renowned for a high content of folic acid that stimulates the blood-forming function of bone marrow and the formation of chlorohydric acid in the stomach. So melon is useful in the case of deficiency of folic acid in the organism: 150 g of melon pulp meet the daily requirement of this valuable substance for man. The same 150 g of melon cover the daily rate of kalium, magnesium and the rare mineral germanium that assist the normal work of the heart and the kidneys, reducing pressure and the cholesterol level in blood. By the way, there is more kalium and magnesium in melon than in, for instance, cucumbers, pear and cabbage.
From the moment of ripening fructose starts prevailing in melon. It is sweeter than ordinary sugar but, as distinct from it, does not cause the strain of the insular apparatus of the pancreatic gland, that is very important for diabetics. Fructose is considered to be the most suitable natural sugar for all aged people. It is the best kind of sugar in the disorder of cholesterol and adipoid exchange, of the work of the intestinal tract and in atherosclerosis. The content of glucose in melon is quite sufficient to keep the normal concentration of sugar in blood and the formation in the liver the store of glycogen, supporting the nutrition of muscles, especially the cardiac muscle.
Melon helps to losing weight
What is very precious in melon: it is a universal product for those who want to lose weight. It has a lot of liquid – 67 % and few calories – 100 g of melon contain only 42 kkal (mainly on account of natural sugars). So it is very useful to arrange melon fasting days – delicious, effective and no contradictions. A few slices of melon create the feeling of satiation, and a high content of liquid promotes the organism purification, in addition the lion’s share of carbohydrates in melon is represented by valuable for the organism monosaccharides at the full absence of amylum.
